On 26 November, Dawn reported an incident of extortion demands, where a lawmaker received a message from the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) demanding for “donations.” The message read, “We hope you won’t disappoint,” warning, “Refusal to provide financial support will make you a problem.”
Return of target killings, bomb blasts, kidnappings and extortion calls
While violence has returned to Swat in recent months, incidents of racketeering have begun in several areas. Swat community activist Ahmad Shah said, “They started the same old game: target killings, bomb blasts, kidnappings — and making calls for extortion.” He added, “They have their own system of reward and punishment,” adding, “They have established an alternate government, so how are people supposed to resist?” Similarly, Provincial lawmaker Nisar Mohmand stated that 80 to 95 per cent of well-off residents in surrounding districts of Swat are now blackmailed, victims.
